About Borkly

Borkly exists because of a particular half hour. It is somewhere around four in the afternoon. Your dog has slept through the morning and had a walk at lunchtime, and now they are standing next to your chair with a ball in their mouth while you are trying to finish something.

That half hour is what we pick toys for.

We pick toys, we do not invent them

We are not an engineering company, and we do not pretend to be. What we do is go through a great deal of what is already out there, keep the small number of toys that still hold a dog's attention after the first week, and leave the rest.

Most interactive dog toys let dogs down in the same few ways. They move in one predictable line, so a dog has them figured out in a minute. They are sized for a catalog photo rather than a real mouth. Or they are sold on being tough, which usually means hard enough to worry about your dog's teeth. The toys we keep stay a little unpredictable, come in a size a dog can actually carry, and give a little when a dog bites down.

A toy helps, it does not replace you

A lot of toys in this category are sold as if they will run your dog's day for you. They will not, and we would rather say so.

What a good toy gives you is fifteen or twenty minutes of play at the hardest point of the day, and a calmer dog afterward. Your dog still needs the walk, the training and your attention. A ball that rolls by itself is a way to join in, not a stand-in for you.

We are just as plain about what our toys can take. None of them is chew proof. They are made for dogs who chase and carry, not for dogs whose favorite game is taking things apart, and we say that on every product page so there are no surprises later.

Two kinds of tired

The thing that took us longest to learn is that a dog can be tired in the legs and still restless. Running a dog more mostly makes them fitter, so the walk that worked last month is not enough this month.

What really settles a dog is using their nose and their head. That is why our range comes in two halves. BorkBall covers the chase, the urge behind that nose nudging your arm at four o'clock. BorkBrain covers sniffing, licking and puzzle solving, the kind of play that leaves a dog stretched out and content afterward. Many homes find they like one of each.

We share what we have learned in our guides, from what enrichment really means to why a longer walk is not always the answer. None of it asks you to buy anything.
