You are out for six hours and you feel bad about it, so you leave every toy they own on the floor. You come home and they have not moved. The cushion, however, has.
Toys left out for a dog on their own work differently from toys you play with together, and the difference is mostly about timing and safety rather than which toy you pick.
The first thirty minutes are the whole game
Most dogs sleep through the majority of the time you are gone. The difficult stretch is the first half hour, when the sound of your car is still fresh and they are winding themselves up, and the last half hour, when they start expecting you back.
So the aim is not to fill six hours. It is to have something absorbing enough to cover that first stretch, so they go past the anxious phase into sleeping instead of into chewing the door frame. A frozen lick mat handed over as you pick up your keys does more than a floor covered in toys.

What is safe to leave unsupervised
The test is whether a piece could come off and be swallowed while nobody is watching.
A frozen lick mat or stuffed rubber toy. Best single option. Licking lowers arousal, freezing makes it last, and there is nothing to break off. A silicone lick mat with something soft spread into the grooves and frozen overnight keeps most dogs busy for twenty to thirty minutes. There is more on how to get the most out of one in what a lick mat is for.
A snuffle mat with breakfast in it. Fabric, no small parts, and it turns the meal into a search. Give it as you leave rather than feeding from a bowl first. The BorkBrain Sniff works for this and goes in the washing machine afterward.
A solid rubber chew. Sized so it cannot be swallowed and soft enough to dent with a thumbnail.
A treat dispensing ball. One solid piece, no stuffing. The BorkBrain Snack pays out slowly as it rolls.
What to take away before you go
Anything with stuffing or a squeaker. Rope toys that are fraying, since swallowed threads cause blockages that need surgery. Anything small enough to swallow whole. Rawhide, which swells.
And, to be straight about it, anything electronic, including our own moving balls. Toys with a motor, a battery and an LED are for when you are in the room. A dog left alone with one for six hours will eventually work on the shell, and a battery is not something you want them to get to. The BorkBall Disco is a very good answer to the four o'clock restlessness when you are home. It is not a leave alone toy, and nobody should sell it to you as one.
Routine matters more than the toy
A walk before you leave changes everything, because a dog who has already used their legs and their nose is ready to sleep rather than pace. Even fifteen minutes helps.
Keep departures boring. A long emotional goodbye tells your dog that something significant is happening, which is the opposite of what you want. Pick up the keys, hand over the lick mat, leave.
Leave something with your smell on it, an unwashed shirt on their bed. It costs nothing and it helps more than it sounds like it should.

Boredom and anxiety look similar and are not
Worth being able to tell apart, because the fixes are different.
A bored dog chews things that are interesting: shoes, remote controls, whatever was on the coffee table. They are fine for the first hour, and they eat and drink normally while you are out.
An anxious dog aims at exits. Door frames, window sills, the carpet by the front door. It starts within minutes. They often will not touch food at all while you are gone, so the lick mat comes back untouched, which is the clearest single sign. There may be drooling, scratched paint, barking that neighbors mention.
No toy fixes the second one. It responds well to a proper desensitization plan, often with help from a vet or a behaviorist, and leaving better toys out will not move it. Our guide to dog separation anxiety covers how to tell the two apart and what helps.
A workable setup
Walk before you go. Frozen lick mat handed over at the door. Breakfast in a snuffle mat instead of a bowl. Boring exit. Then the moving toys and the chasing when you are back and can watch. If you are still not sure which of the two you are dealing with, the signs of boredom are laid out separately.
